I understand things by rebuilding them and watching where they break. Most of what's on this site started as a question I got wrong the first time.

Writing software the next person can still change.

I work full-stack, but most of my paid hours go into code somebody else wrote years before I got there. Struts, JSP, files long enough that nobody volunteers to open them. The job is moving that onto Spring Boot and Next.js without breaking what's serving real traffic right now.

That taught me one thing worth keeping: working code is the floor, not the finish line. What decides whether it was any good is whether someone can read it six months later and still follow the reasoning. So I write things down as I go, and this site is partly where they end up.

There's something I didn't know yesterday. Now I do.

Leaving work half-done and forgetting why — that I hate

Five minutes asking beats half a day guessing

Moving old logistics systems onto a newer stack, and wiring bill-of-lading data through to customs over EDI.
- Moving the back end off JSP/Struts onto Spring Boot and the front end onto Next.js, screen by screen, with the system staying up the whole way
- Built the EDI flow that pushes bill of lading (B/L) data to the customs system, in the exact format they accept
- Went back through the slow queries on the main business flows and rewrote the ones that deserved it
- On call for incidents and shipping features on a system with real users, where every change needs a way back

- Added and fixed features across CRM and ERP to match how the departments actually worked, not how the spec described it
- Designed features on both ends so the next module could be added without tearing the last one out
- Cut load times on the screens people complained about most
- Built the ReactJS screens to hold up on an office monitor and a phone alike
- Wired the REST APIs between React and Spring Boot, agreeing the data contract up front so neither side had to guess
